The article aims to highlight the rising groundwater level phenomenon in Algeria through a geographic approach that integrates GIS, Google Earth, and social media datasets. This phenomenon has triggered a cascade of problems and is still a silent threat to Algeria’s fragile Saharan ecosystem. The results revealed significant spatial variability in this issue, with the southeastern and southwestern regions of Algeria being the most severely affected. Several natural and anthropogenic factors have been identified as contributing to this phenomenon, including the overexploitation of the North-Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) and inadequate drainage systems. The findings pave the way for further investigations by broadening the scope beyond Algeria’s borders to include neighboring countries that share NWSAS.
